Background

Zuto is a young, entrepreneurial car finance broker with a fun and lively culture. They recruit for business support and contact centre roles in Macclesfield, and marketing, digital and software talent for the teams in their state-of-the-art office in central Manchester.

Challenge

The car finance industry is booming and Zuto is experiencing year-on-year growth. Sales, customer service and tech roles are critical for future success. The business historically relied on agency introductions for new hires but more recently moved to an in-house resourcing model. They operate a successful referral scheme; however, it is a manual process that takes a lot of time and resource to manage in an already stretched team. With over 100 vacancies per year, the Talent team are on a journey to raise employer brand awareness (following a rebrand from Car Loan 4U) and reach new audiences for specialist roles that are notoriously harder to fill.

Solution

Aware of the benefits of a successful employee referral programme, but with limited resource to continue administrating the current method, Zuto agreed to pilot WOO. WOO, the job vacancy sharing app, makes it easy and fun for employees to share jobs with their social network through Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and text. Zuto created the initial WOO Contact Centre Comms-Kit to help deliver an internal campaign that included a two-week teaser countdown, launch day activities and reinforcement messaging following the launch.

The programme got off to a fast start with 35 people downloading the app in the first hour and a successful referral and hire being a Software Engineer, which can be a particularly difficult role to fill.

Over the 12-week pilot period 30% of employees downloaded the app, Zuto received 67 applications and made 35 hires. Sarah Brooks-Pearce, Head of Talent says: “The team at Zuto have embraced the digital concept of referrals, there’s a real enjoyment of sharing vacancies online and being part of the leader board. We’ve found that hearing about roles from connections or friends has a greater impact on candidates rather than being contacted directly by the Talent team or an agency. Using WOO we reach a wider untapped audience and leverage networks that we wouldn’t have been able to using our previous referral method.”

The challenge:
The company is very successful and experiencing rapid growth so sales and customer service roles are business critical. A stretched in-house resourcing team and low employer brand awareness resulting from a recent re-brand had meant that Zuto had needed to rely on expensive agency recruiters to keep on top of up to 80 new hires each year. In particular, using recruitment agencies for digital and software development roles was especially expensive and frequently paying large fees did not bring the right quality of candidates forward.
